Preparations are underway for the historic coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort in London. Despite forecasts of rain, large crowds have already begun gathering along the procession route. With over 100 heads of state set to attend, a significant security operation has been put in place in central London. Protest groups opposed to the monarchy have also promised to demonstrate during the coronation celebrations.
The service will be witnessed by 2,300 guests, including Prince Harry, who arrived from the United States on a commercial flight. It is expected to be a diverse and inclusive ceremony, with contributions from representatives of different faiths, including Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Sikh. Women bishops will also take part in the service for the first time in almost a thousand years.
The coronation procession will be led by the King and Queen Consort, who will travel in the Gold State Coach back to Buckingham Palace amidst a mile-long procession, accompanied by 4,000 soldiers and 19 military bands. Meticulous rehearsals have been carried out, with landmarks such as the Cenotaph marked out with traffic cones. However, the weather forecast for the day, which includes cloud and showers, has raised concerns about the planned flypast during the balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace.
The run-up to the coronation has also seen protests by anti-monarchy groups, including the Republic campaign group, who have announced their intention to hold a demonstration along the procession route. The church has made it clear that pledging allegiance to the King is optional, with people instead given the option of having a private moment of reflection.
The first coronation in 70 years will be a significant event in British history, marking the ascent of King Charles III to the throne of the United Kingdom and 14 other realms. The ceremony will be presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury and attended by notable figures such as US First Lady Jill Biden, President Macron of France, and entertainers Ant and Dec.
