The Sri Lankan government plans to invest approximately $132 million in port development projects using revenue generated from port operations, according to the country’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva.
Speaking at an event in Colombo, the minister revealed that over $100 million has been allocated for the Eastern Container Terminal and $32 million for the Jaya Container Terminal, both of which are fully owned subsidiaries of the state-owned Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
In addition, the Trincomalee harbor will be developed for bulk cargo operations, while the Galle harbor will offer a yacht service and facilitate the anchoring of large ships to boost the tourism industry. The Sri Lankan government aims to position the country as a logistics and transport hub in the Indian Ocean.
