Supreme Court Justice A.H.M.D. Nawaz, Chairman of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry tasked with investigating the findings of prior commissions and committees, submitted a synopsis of recommendations to President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Monday, February 6th.
The synopsis, which outlines an executive summary of approximately 27 recommendations, highlights the need for resolution and a forward-looking, victim-centered approach to address post-conflict issues in Sri Lanka.
The synopsis also emphasizes the importance of strengthening the institutional capacity of the Office on Missing Persons, Office for Reparations, and Office for National Unity and Reconciliation, and outlines plans for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Sri Lanka to be established in the future.
Justice Nawaz’s recommendations also call for institutional reforms and a policy of zero tolerance for conduct that violates international human rights law and international law to ensure non-recurrence.
