According to General Shavendra Silva, Army Commander and Head of the National Operations Center for the Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak, the country is expected to be fully operational by September if nothing major happens (NOCPCO).
According to the Army Commander, all civilians over the age of 30 in the country will be given the COVID-19 vaccine by September 2021, as directed by the President.
General Silva said it was not possible to keep the country closed forever, adding that the President often instructed the health officials and security forces to take all necessary health and safety measures to reopen the country.
He also said that discussions have been initiated to open the country to foreigners and that the Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga is continuing to work in this regard.
The Army Commander said that foreigners who come immunized with both doses of corona vaccines will be given the opportunity to enter the country after a PCR test.
He said that the vaccination program has been expedited throughout the country and that the medical units of the three Armed Forces including the Army will extend their fullest contribution in this regard.
