According to Ranil Wickremesinghe, a parliamentarian, the only way out of the country’s current economic crisis is to work with the International Monetary Fund (23).
Addressing the parliament after taking oaths as the national list MP of the United National Party Wednesday, the former Prime Minister requested the government to come up with a strategy to overcome the pandemic and the impending economic crash.
He said that talking about the past could not recover the country from the current situation and requested the government to disclose its options if it did not want to deal with the International Monetary Fund. He added that there is no use in speaking of the statistics without having an alternative.
Mr. Wickremasinghe said that a number of issues have come together today and the corona epidemic has also had a severe impact on the country’s economy. He also requested the House to allocate time for a debate on these matters.
The UNP leader said the task force appointed for the corona epidemic control could not move forward and that according to the Constitution, the power to make decisions should be vested in the Cabinet and Parliament, not in the hands of a Department Head such as the Army Commander.
He said it is vital that the cabinet takes control of this situation and answers to parliament as per the Constitution.
