Niluka Karunaratne, the national badminton champion, will represent Sri Lanka at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
The two-time Olympic shuttler is the sixth Sri Lankan to qualify for the big international multi-sport event, which was postponed last year because of the COVID-19 epidemic.
The 36-year-old announced his retirement from all local tournaments in February of this year, but he continued to examine the international stage with the Tokyo Olympics in mind.
Karunaratne won his 17th title at the 2020 National Badminton Championships, prompting the announcement.
Karunaratne, a Galle native, began playing badminton at the age of eight. He attended Dharmasoka College in Ambalangoda and Royal College in Colombo for his elementary and secondary education.
Karunaratne also served as the captain of the Sri Lankan Olympic team in 2012.
Sri Lanka’s most decorated shuttler has a total of ten international titles after winning her debut in 2011 at Puerto Rico International.
