People in the Kirulapone area will be vaccinated against Covid-19 today with the Sinopharm vaccine, which was donated by the Chinese government, according to Army Commander General Shavendra Silva, the Head of the National Operations Center for Prevention of Covid-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO).
Sri Lanka commenced the administration of China’s Sinopharm vaccine to the public Saturday after the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday approved the COVID-19 vaccine from China’s state-owned drug maker Sinopharm for emergency use.
The vaccination program will be carried out in the Gampaha, Kalutara and Colombo districts of the Western Province where the highest number of Covid cases have been reported during the last 14 days, Army Commander General Shavendra Silva said.
He further stated that the vaccine was given to people in the Panadura, Mattakkuliya and Jinthupitiya Municipal Council areas yesterday.
About Sinopharm Vaccine
Sinopharm BBIBP-CorV, also known as the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine, is one of two inactivated virus COVID-19 vaccines developed by Sinopharm. The other inactivated virus COVID-19 vaccine developed by Sinopharm is WIBP-CorV which is comparably less successful.
