Minister of Education Prof. G.L. Peiris announced today that all schools, pre-schools, universities, and tuition classes will be closed until further notice (May 07).
After considering the current COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country, which has been aggravated by a third wave, the decision was made jointly by the education and health authorities.
Due to the recent increase in COVID-19 numbers, the Education Minister announced on April 27 that all schools across the country would be closed until April 30.
However, the reopening of schools was postponed until today due to a rise in virus infections in the country following the Sinhala and Tamil New Year last month.
Since April 27th, the number of daily coronavirus cases recorded in Sri Lanka has remained above 1,000.
Since the outbreak of the pandemic last year, Sri Lanka has reported 119,424 infections. More than 17,700 active cases are currently being treated, according to official reports.
