Dullas Alahapperuma, Minister of Power said that it is the absolute responsibility of the present government and the President to introduce a new electoral system that suits the country.
He also said that electoral system should be designed to be attractive to future generations as well as to present generations who are fed up with politics.
He made these observations addressing the Kamburupitiya and Kirinda Puhulwella Regional Coordinating Committee meetings.
Dullas Alahapperuma said that the committee appointed under the chairmanship of Dinesh Gunawardena during Mahinda Rajapaksa’s presidency to change the current informal electoral system had created a very practical and rational electoral system and it would suit the country well.
He also said that the only positive feature of the current electoral system, the proportional system that guarantees the rights of minorities, should be further protected in the name of democracy.
The Minister also said that the preference system was the reason for the perception that the people’s representative was a thief and a crook and it is necessary to change that system. Therefore, everyone must be committed to creating a country, a constitution and an electoral system that suits the future, Minister Alahapperuma said.
