The Ministry of Transport has decided to expand the “Park and Ride City Bus” service introduced to ease traffic congestion in Colombo.
- The State Ministry of Transport has planned to extend City Bus service to the Piliyandala 120 bus route and the Galle Road, Moratuwa-Colombo bus route as well as several other major cities in the country in the next few weeks. Steps will also be taken to deploy modern passenger buses for this purpose.
- The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) said that there is a significant revenue generation from “city buses” currently on only four Colombo-bound bus routes.
- The Park and Ride City bus service was officially launched on January 15 as a pilot project and is currently operating from Kottawa Makumbura Multiple Transport Center on routes 138, 174, 112 and 115.
The “city bus” charges one and a half times the normal bus fare and the Sri Lanka Transport Board says that it has earned a significant amount of revenue from the service during the past three and a half months
