The parliamentary seat of imprisoned Samagi Jana Balawegaya parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake will be vacated, according to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
The Speaker stated that the Secretary General of Parliament had told the Election Commission of the vacancy in MP Ramanayake’s seat after taking legal advice.
After convicting him of contempt of court, Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court sentenced former state minister and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake to four years in prison in January.
The Supreme Court also dismissed a motion filed by MP Ranjan Ramanayake to get his sentence overturned.
The Court of Appeal on Monday dismissed without further proceeding a petition filed by the MP requesting the Court to issue an order preventing the parliament from working to annul his parliamentary seat.
