Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle, State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemiology, and COVID-19 Disease Control, indicated that Chinese nationals residing in Sri Lanka would be given priority when receiving the China-made COVID-19 vaccine “Sinopharm.”
According to her, the Sinopharm vaccine will be given to Chinese nationals in Sri Lanka first, as requested by the Chinese Embassy.
When asked about the Sinopharm vaccine’s lack of WHO approval, the State Minister responded, “A lot of vaccines have been given WHO approval for emergency use.” They’re being examined right now.
Even in our country, permission has only been granted to accept donations [of Sinopharm vaccine]. Because the Sinopharm vaccine is used in China, Chinese citizens living in the country will be able to get it as well.”
The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) of Sri Lanka approved the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine manufactured in China for emergency use on Saturday.
After the AstraZeneca and Russia’s Sputnik V vaccines, this is the third COVID-19 vaccine to be approved in the country.
