Eighteen countries have pledged to support Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).
These countries have already announced that they would oppose any move to adopt a resolution against Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.
According to Foreign Ministry sources, the Government has launched a campaign to make the Member States of the UNHRC aware of the present situation in the country.
However, the UN Core Group comprising the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Malawi is expected to submit a Resolution against Sri Lanka at the 46th UNHRC Session in Geneva.
The cremation policy of individuals who die of COVID-19 and the requirement of a comprehensive accountability process for all alleged violations and abuses of human rights committed in Sri Lanka are among the highlights of this Resolution.
It has also been reported that this Resolution has also called for the monitoring of Sri Lanka’s implementation of 20th Amendment to the Constitution while stressing the importance of democratic governance.
