According to the Department of Government Information, the Cabinet of Ministers has issued permission to buy 3.5 million Covid-19 vaccines from the United Kingdom.
Sri Lanka State Pharmaceutical Corporation will, therefore, enter into a purchase agreement with AstraZeneca PLC.
The Acting Minister of Health, Prof. Channa Jayasumana, has put forward a related proposal.
In the meantime, as a direct purchase from the Serum Institute in India, the government has agreed to purchase 10 million Oxford-AstraZeneca Covishield vaccines for USD 52.5 million.
In addition, approval by the Cabinet was given for the signing of the Uniform Indemnification Agreement submitted by the COVAX mechanism to speed up the vaccination process within the COVAX facility.
In addition, the Ministry of Health aims to vaccinate 14 million of the nation’s total population, the Department of Government Information said.
