The program to develop 100,000 kilometers of island wide rural roads according to the President’s ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendor’ Policy Statement is currently being successfully implemented throughout the island.
The government has taken steps to develop all roads belonging to the Provincial Councils and selected major roads belonging to the Local Government Institutions under the program of developing 100,000 km of roads.
The development of 13 roads in the Eheliyagoda and Ratnapura electorates using carpet and concrete was commenced recently under the patronage of Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi and with the participation of Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council Chairman Kanchana Jayaratne.
The estimated cost for the project is Rs. 270 million. Selected roads in Hewainna, Iddamalgoda, Moragala, Asgagula, Mahara, Waladura, Pathagama, Kitulpe, Ihalatheppanawa, Wathuyaya, Eknaligoda, Sudagala and Uthurugili Male Grama Niladhari Divisions will be developed under the project.
The road from Puwak Dola Junction to Mallagahawila on the Dikhena Road in Palinda Nuwara is also being developed. The development work of this 600 meter long road was initiated by the Member of Parliament Sanjeewa Edirimanne. The estimated cost for this is Rs.11.3 million.
Many major roads in the Kalavanchikudi Palukamam area in Batticaloa are being carpeted and Rs. 8.93 billion is to be spent for road development activities in the Batticaloa district. Minister of State S. Viyalendran states that 127 rural roads will be developed under this project.
The cost of developing the Hingurakgoda Unagala Vehera West road is Rs. 22.2 million. Its construction commenced under the patronage of Parliamentarian Amarakeerthi Athukorala. This will benefit the people of Unagala Temple and many surrounding villages.
