Italy is one of the hardest hit nations in the crisis, with the entire country on lockdown. There are at least 47,021 cases in the European nation, with the death toll standing at 4,032. On Friday, soldiers were being drafted to enforce the ongoing lockdown, after 627 people died from the virus in 24 hours. Italy is guaranteed to experience a recession, with the country likely facing a financial crisis due to high government debt and a weak banking system.
France and Spain are two other European nations on lockdown. The German states of Bavaria and Saarland have also imposed a 14-day ban on going outdoors, with a lockdown possibly extending to the rest of the country.
The U.S. continues to take serious measures. California, New York, and Illinois are just a few of the states which have issued shelter-in-place orders or tighter social distancing measures, closing down non-essential businesses and urging citizens to stay home.
There are more than 19,624 cases in the U.S., with the domestic death toll at 260.
The coronavirus originated at an animal and seafood market in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December. The virus has infected at least 81,304 in China, with Beijing locking down millions of people to prevent the spread of the disease.
