Development News: The Urban Development Ministry has launched several development projects under the instructions of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to boost tourism for Nuwara Eliya during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
A communiqué released by the Ministry of Urban Development claimed that the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council also supports the Ministry in the project.
Under the project, gymnasiums and walking trails were already established around Gregory Lake and boat and horse rides were also included.
Deputy Director Ranjith Bandara of Nuwara Eliya Urban Development Authority (UDA) said the Gregory Lake is to be developed in five phases. He added that measures were taken to avoid detrimental environmental impacts.
In addition, sanitary facilities, as well as small-and medium-sized restaurants, are also to be built in the city, Bandara said, adding that the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council would see the water supply and garbage disposal facilities.
The Deputy Director also said that under’ Phase V’ of the project, no large-scale constructions are to be set up.
“We don’t expect the large-scale hotels and resorts to gain any revenue. Our main aim is to provide the local and foreign visitors with a pleasant environment while preserving the ecosystem, “he added.
