Local News Update: The telecom regulator has directed all mobile service providers to include a free-of-charge option to opt-out or unsubscribe so consumers who receive unsolicited advertising messages can choose to stop receiving them.
The decision protects unsolicited advertising messages sent or distributed by third parties by the mobile service providers themselves, said Oshada Senanayake, Director General of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL)
Users of mobile services usually have the option of collecting promotional messages from third-party vendors when applying for, say, loyalty cards. Mr. Senanayake said, most organizations are not getting consent.
They collect numbers through some form of registration and use the information to send short messages (SMS) that users have never requested.
