Local News Update: On Wednesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended a statement to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on New Year’s greeting. “In his talks with Gotabaya Rajapaksa, PM Modi expressed confidence that India and Sri Lanka would further strengthen their friendly ties in 2020,” said the Office of the Indian Prime Minister.
In his conversation with PM Mahinda Rajapaksa, Modi reiterated India’s commitment to further extending the close and comprehensive cooperation with the island nation. PM Modi also spoke to King of Bhutan Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheik Hasina and Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
“The Prime Minister, on behalf of the people of India and on his own behalf, sent his New Year greetings and good wishes to the leaders,” the PMO said in a statement. The PM also highlighted India’s commitment to global peace and security as well as’ neighborhood first’ policy. It said PM Modi stressed India’s commitment to’ neighborhood first’ policy and a dream of mutual peace, protection, prosperity and development for all the friends and partners in the region in India.
