Development News Update: Minister of Industrial Export, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation, Prasanna Ranatunga says that the Batticaloa Airport will be developed as an international airport. Minister Ranatunga also said that the Indian government has extended its full cooperation to develop the domestic airport and it has recently been discussed with Sri Lankan High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu.
The Minister has already requested a report from the Civil Aviation Authority on the measures to be taken to improve the Batticaloa Airport as an international airport and on the areas to be developed at the airport. The Minister said the Government of India would also like to expand its air services to Batticaloa airport.
Batticaloa Airport was set up by the Civil Aviation Department in 1958. Due to the prevailing situation in the country, on March 27, 1983, the Sri Lankan Air Force took over the airport and served as a base for the Sri Lankan Air Force. The previous government spent 1.4 billion rupees to reconstruct Batticaloa Domestic Airport after its operations and maintenance with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on May 31, 2016.
