- President instructs to broaden rice storage facilities
Local News Update: The Cabinet Sub Committee on Cost of Living was first convened at the Presidential Secretariat recently (24) under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
During this meeting, particular attention was focused on supplying essential food items at a concessionary rate to the public during the forthcoming festive season and ensuring that there is no shortage.
In addition, President Rajapaksa instructed officials to purchase harvest from next season using a scientific method.
The President pointed out that this approach would address several issues that arise during the paddy purchase process. Attention was drawn to extend the country-wide rice storage facilities.
President Rajapaksa also questioned how the public would benefit from government-controlled rice prices.
The Consumer Affairs Authority has reported that the sale of rice at higher prices than the Maximum Retail Price is gradually declining and the raids on rice traders selling rice at higher prices have been increased. In this way, swift action has also been taken to educate the traders.
An appraisal was performed on the government’s measures to control the price of wheat flour as well as the tax relief for other essential food products.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, ministers and parliamentarians including Chamal Rajapaksa, Ramesh Pathirana, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Vidura Wickramanayake, Sanath Nishantha, Taraka Balasuriya, Secretary to the President, P.B. Jayasundara, Secretaries of the Ministry and public servants took part.
