Local News from Sri Lanka: A team of experts led by Dr. Amila Sasanka Ratnayake at the Kandy Teaching Hospital succeeded in transplanting all four fingers of a person who was taken to the hospital with his fingers placed inside an industrial grinder.
Following the surgery, Patient Mohammed Faizal (30) was moved to Ward 22 and is said to recover well.
Hospital sources said Faizal was taken with his hand lodged inside a grinder to the Kandy Teaching Hospital on Sunday night. Faizal is a carpenter who regularly makes a living through grinder job. The physicians said they were able to perform the surgery successfully owing to minimize harm to the blood vessels and not too serious tissue harm.
Hospital authorities said it was very hard for the hospital employees to remove the grinder when the person was carried to the hospital as four of their fingers were lodged inside. Before continuing with the surgery, the grinder itself had to be cut to extricate the fingers.
