The Ministry of Digital Infrastructure and Information Technology (MDIIT) is co-organizing today a National Public-Private Dialog (PPD) on the “Legal Framework for the Proposed Data Protection Bill” in collaboration with the International Trade Center (ITC).
The event will take place as part of the EU-Sri Lanka Trade-Related Assistance Project, financed by the European Union (EU), whose lead implementing agency is ITC. The PPD’s main goal is to provide an overview of the suggested Data Protection Bill and to seek remarks and suggestions from various government and private sector stakeholders to improve the bill.
Frank Hess, European Union Head of Cooperation said, “The global e-commerce market was worth € 12 trillion in 2016. Electronic sales were produced by one out of five companies in the EU-28. The proportion of e-sales turnover was 18% of complete business turnover with 10 or more employees.
And that’s getting bigger. There is elevated internet penetration in Sri Lanka. Ensuring appropriate security of customer information by setting up a conducive legislative structure is crucial.
