Afghanistan required a rain-revised target of just 187 out of 41 overs but was beaten by 34 runs after a dismal batting crash by Sri Lanka. In their chase, Afghanistan fell to 54-5, but Najibullah Zadran and captain Gulbadin Naib’s partnership of 64 gave them hope.
But Nuwan Pradeep came back and took two fast wickets before Dimuth Karunaratne for 43 ran out of Najibullah. That left the final couple having to win 42 more, but four matches later Lasith Malinga played Hamid Hassan with a yorker trademark.
Earlier, Sri Lanka had gone all out from 141-1 to 201 –a crash sparked as Mohammed Nabi took three wickets in the 22nd. Victory would have been the second in a World Cup in Afghanistan and the first in the tournament against a Test-playing country.
Instead, Sri Lanka earns their first win of the 2019 World Cup.
