Events in Sri Lanka: The rise in the global human population has exacerbated the loss and fragmentation of forests, especially in the tropics, posing significant threats to the biodiversity of the planet. Therefore, it was not possible to overemphasize the pressing need to plan for sustainable management and conservation of our biological riches. The theme for ATBC-APC 2019 on “Bridging Biodiversity Conservation Elements: Save, Study, Use” is a timely reminder of both conservationists and resource users ‘ critical roles in this context.
The ATBC-APC Sri Lanka will establish a platform for bringing together scientists, conservation practitioners and company experts to tackle critical conservation problems facing the Asia-Pacific region through science discourse. This includes actions such as addressing knowledge gaps and promoting data sharing, which in turn would contribute to sustainable trade between the environment and business, sustainably approaching public-private partnerships when using natural capital, initiating innovative conservation funding, and enhancing nature-culture linkages to decrease environmental crime.
