Development News: President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have ceremoniously declared the newly constructed extension open.
With this new section opening, the Southern Expressway’s total length is 222 kilometres. That also allows direct travel on the expressway from Colombo to Hambantota.
From Matara to Hambantota, the Southern Expressway is built in four phases: Matara-Beliatta, Beliatta-Barawakumbuka, Barawakumbuka-Andarawewa and Andarawewa-Mattala.
According to the Road Development Authority (RDA), building this new section has cost the Government Rs 250 million.
There will be six interchanges between Matara and Hambantota, with six interchanges being built at Aparekka, Beliatta, Kasagala, Angunakolapelessa, Barawakumbuka and Sooriyawewa.
Accordingly, Toll Chargers for vehicles as below :
vehicles with 2 axles and four wheels:
Kottawa to Hambantota – Rs. 800.00
Kadawatha to Hambantota – Rs. 900.00
Katunayake to Hambantota – Rs. 1,000.00
Godagama to Hambantota – Rs. 400.00
For vehicles with 2 axles and six wheels:
Kottawa to Hambantota – Rs. 1,450.00
Kadawatha to Hambantota – Rs. 1,600.00
Katunayake to Hambantota – Rs. 1,900.00
Godagama to Hambantota – Rs. 650.00
For vehicles with more than 2 axles:
Kottawa to Hambantota – Rs. 2,550.00
Kadawatha to Hambantota – Rs. 2,800.00
Katunayake to Hambantota – Rs. 3,150.00
Godagama to Hambantota – Rs. 1,100.00
Also, Bus fares announced today:
• Hambantota to Colombo Fort would be Rs 880,
• Tangalle to Colombo Fort Rs 680,
• Hambantota to Makumbura Rs 810,
• Tangalle to Makumbura Rs 610.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has added 10 more luxury buses to the Southern Expressway from Matara to Hambantota.
