Local News Update: The Ministry of Passenger Transport will soon be launching a smart card for quick train travel and an e-ticketing system for seat reservation in trains. Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has submitted a Memorandum to the Cabinet requesting its approval to implement these two facilities.
A media release released by the Ministry of Passenger Transport Management said there appears to be a large racket involving the fleecing of local passengers and foreign tourists due to illegal activities committed by certain individuals with regard to previous seat reservations on trains. Some of the touts involved in this racket are said to sell railway long distance tickets far beyond the normal rate.
For example, a ticket from Rs. 1,200 was being sold to Rs. 4,000 in the region of Rs. 3,000. That has made booking seats in trains challenging for even local visitors.
