No tsunami threat in the Indian Ocean south-east of Sri Lanka from earthquake

Local News Update: An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 has been recorded today at 2.34 am (12) in the Indian Ocean off Sri Lanka’s South East coast, the Meteorology Department says. Nevertheless, the Department noted that there is no tsunami danger to the island due to the 10 km deep earthquake.

Hence Sri Lanka’s coastal areas have been declared safe.

The Department of Meteorology announced that in consultation with relevant national and international agencies, this warning was issued.
