Local News from Sri Lanka: The Ministry of Finance has taken steps to immediately purchase Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) 12,000 Metric Tons (MT) as a solution for the LP gas shortage currently on the market. Steps will be taken for the Ministry of Finance’s Litro Gas Company to import the stock and release it to the market immediately, the Ministry of Finance said in a statement.
A ship carrying 3600 MT arrived at the harbor on Saturday (02), and another vessel carrying another 3600 MT will arrive at the port on Tuesday. A shipment of 6000 MT each of the gas purchased under the usual procurement process and under the emergency procurement will arrive on the island within the next week.
The government urges customers not to worry unnecessarily as the shortage occurred due to a private gas company’s low supply would end this week. Authorities arrested over 40 dealers who used the shortage as an opportunity to conceal the gas supplies and sell at higher prices. The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has taken steps to escalate the raids in the days ahead and will take legal action.
