Ampara farmers starts Maha season work

Local News from Sri Lanka: Agricultural activities began for the Maha season by farmers in the Ampara District. Agricultural department officials said it was planned to develop about 120,000 acres of paddy fields, and farmers were urged to finish their work by October 21.

This was discussed at a recent meeting in the A.I. Wickrama Auditorium of the Ampara District Secretariat under the patronage of Ampara District Government Agent D.M.L. Bandara. Water from the Senanayake Reservoir would be needed for the irrigation schemes.

Since the water level in the dam was small, however, farmers were also encouraged to use rainwater as well.
