Local News from Sri Lanka: In a new turn of events, Sri Lankan Parliament Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said if elected to run for the presidency, he will abolish the executive presidency. Jayasuriya has informally intimated his desire to run with the assistance of non-political civil society organizations for the upcoming presidential elections but says he will take the next step if only invited by the party.
Currently, the United National Party is in a deadlock struggling to achieve consensus on the nomination of an appropriate presidential candidate. The competition was proclaimed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe and Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa.
