Hyundai introduced a version of its Sonata hybrid that has solar panels to support battery charging. The Korean vehicle manufacturer said that if the solar roof was used for six hours a day, up to 60 percent of the energy could be provided for the battery of the vehicle.
The panels would provide enough power for 1,300 km (800miles) a year to propel the Sonata, he added.
Hyundai said it was planning to give the roof to other designs in its range as an optional extra.
It would increase fuel efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by fitting hybrids with panels that can harvest solar energy, Hyundai said.
It added that there was an enhanced engine control system for the mid-sized passenger car to guarantee that energy use was as effective as possible.
