Sri Lanka is hosting the Maritime Safety and Security Working Group (MSSWG) First Meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in Colombo on 8 and 9 August. This meeting will finalize the two-year work plan, advancing with the Member States the IORA Action Plan (2017-21) towards the development of a national agenda.
IORA is a dynamic intergovernmental organization with the objective of enhancing regional collaboration and sustainable development in the Indian Ocean region through its 22 member states and 09 Dialog Partners.
The 11th IORA Council of Ministers (COM) in November 2011 recognized the critical economic and strategic relevance of a stable maritime environment in the Indian Ocean region as one of the six (06) priority areas of IORA.
IORA addressed maritime safety and safety in the Indian Ocean through a wide spectrum of operations to improve global security and governance collaboration to address the region’s problems effectively.
Established in September 2018, the IORA MSSWG is currently chaired for a period of two years by Sri Lanka. Last year, the Working Group Terms of Reference were completed in Colombo. Sri Lanka contributes greatly to this Working Group by exchanging knowledge and experiences with its geostrategic place and varied experience in maritime safety and security problems.
IORA engagement aligns with the Blue-Green Economy agenda of Sri Lanka while improving collaboration with the coastal nations of the Indian Ocean.
