Rohit Sharma’s century guide India to a Cricket World Cup victory

Rohit Sharma scored an unbeaten 122 to guide India in their opening World Cup game to a simple six-wicket win against South Africa. Chasing 228, opener Rohit, with 15 balls to spare, guided India home.

South Africa had been limited by a good bowling display to 227-9 with leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal taking 4-51. For the Proteas, who have now lost their first three matches, Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar took two wickets apiece as Chris Morris top-scored 42.

Two-time Indian winners–the last team to launch their campaign with the tournament a week ancient–put together a full bat and ball performance in front of a sold-out Southampton crowd of over 18,500 after losing the toss.

While captain and star attraction Virat Kohli may have produced only 18, brilliantly captured by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, Rohit showed patience and control at the crease, including 13 fours and two sixes, during his 144-ball stay.

They dropped a seemingly regulatory catch provided by Rohit on 107 on another hard day for South Africa as David Miller put him down on additional cover off Kagiso Rabada.
