Sri Lanka’s Inflation Rises Up To 3.6%

Sri Lanka’s nationwide inflation in April 2019 determined under the National Consumer Price Index (NCPI) rose to 3.6 percent from 2.9 percent recorded in March on a year-on-year basis, the Department of Census and Statistics reported Tuesday.

The NCPI for all items for the month of April 2019 marginally increased to 127.3 from 126.4 in March.

The increase in the index point by 0.74 percent was due to the expenditure value increase of food items by 0.39 percent and an expenditure value increase of non-food items by 0.35 percent.

The Year-on-Year inflation of food group has increased from ‐2.3 percent in March 2019 to ‐1.2 percent in April 2019 and that of the non‐food group has also increased from 7.1 percent to 7.5 percent during this month.

Contributions to the inflation in April 2019 from the food group and non-food group are -0.55 percent and 4.15 percent respectively.

The moving average inflation for the month of April 2019 is 1.9 percent. The corresponding rate for the month of March 2019 was 1.7 percent.
