Minister of Trade Nalin Fernando has confirmed that the import of eggs from India will proceed as planned this week, providing relief to bakery owners who had faced challenges procuring the product.
Speaking to Ada Derana’s “Big Focus,” the Minister underscored that the tax on powdered eggs and liquid eggs would be decreased from March 14th onwards. He also explained that the certification process for importing eggs from India had experienced a delay due to the need to obtain numerous certifications from the only three institutions in India authorized to issue them.
“The import of eggs must be done this week. The eggs will arrive at the Colombo Port this week,” the Minister declared, expressing his confidence that the eggs will be available for import soon.
Minister Fernando highlighted that some of the world’s most technologically advanced countries use powdered eggs or liquid eggs for commercial purposes, and stated that efforts would be made to reduce the tax imposed on importing these products. This step is intended to help bakery owners in importing the necessary products for their businesses.
With the Minister’s assurance, it is hoped that the import of eggs from India will proceed smoothly and efficiently, providing much-needed relief to bakery owners who have been grappling with the impact of the egg shortage.
