President Grants 622 Prisoners Pardon on 75th National Independence Day Celebration
The President’s Media Division has announced that a Presidential pardon has been granted to prisoners as per the powers granted to the President under Article 34 of the Constitution, in celebration of the 75th National Independence Day.
As a result, a total of 622 prisoners in various island-wide prisons will be receiving the presidential pardon and preparations have been made for their release from prison institutions today, February 4th.
In addition, the circulars released today indicate that a Presidential pardon has also been granted to prisoners who have undergone rehabilitation for drug-related offenses following their court-ordered punishment.
Furthermore, the Prisons Department has confirmed that 31 prisoners who have displayed good behavior while incarcerated and have been deemed eligible by the Prison License Board will also be released today.
