The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the conferring of the highest civil honour of Sri Lanka, ‘Sri Lankabhimanya’, to Deshabandu Karu Jayasuriya.
This was announced in a special gazette notification on January 24. President
Ranil Wickremesinghe will be presenting this honour to Jayasuriya at a Ceremony of Investiture on February 03 at the Presidential Secretariat.
‘Sri Lankabhimanya’ is awarded by the President to individuals who have rendered exceptionally outstanding and most distinguished service to the nation.
Who is Karu Jayasuriya?
From 1992 to 1994, Jayasuriya served as Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Germany, with accreditation to Austria and Switzerland.
Prior to that, Jayasuriya served in the Ceylon Army Volunteer Force from 1965 to 1972 and worked in the private sector, holding positions such as Chairman of the National Chamber of Commerce, SAARC Chamber of Commerce, Colombo Rubber Traders’ Association, Sugar Importers’ Association and Sri Lanka Business Development Centre.
Additionally, he was Director of the Export Development Board. In 1995, Jayasuriya began his active political career, representing the UNP and held various cabinet ministerial portfolios until 2020, when he served as Speaker of Parliament from 2015 to 2020.
