The Government plans to open 50 new regional passport centers, according to the Public Security Minister, Tiran Alles. At present, four regional offices in Vavuniya, Kurunegala, Matara, and Kandy, in addition to the main office in Colombo, are handling passport issuance. These new centers will be located at Divisional Secretariats and aim to make the passport application process more convenient.
Applicants will be able to visit the centers, provide their biometric information and photos, and receive their passport delivered to their doorstep. The Department of Immigration and Emigration will also introduce an e-passport with an electronic chip containing the owner’s biometric data, which will be accepted globally.
