State Minister Janaka Wakkumbura has stated that steps will be taken to provide the people with the necessary sugar through the Lanka Sugar Company at reduced prices through the Sathosa (CWE).
The Minister stated that the CWE will be used to provide sugar at a cost of Rs. 125 per kilo.
A kilo of sugar in the market these days sells for 210 rupees. Focusing on this, the Lanka Sugar Company has decided to provide sugar at a lower price through the CWE. When prices went up in April, Lanka Sugar’s products were made available to consumers by the CWE.
“Through the Lanka Sugar Company, we will provide the CWE with the quantity of sugar required by the people of this country as soon as possible. The government can intervene to give sugar through the Sathosa at 125 rupees per kilo no matter how high the price in the market is. Therefore, with the intervention of the government through the Lanka Sugar Company, we will provide this from the CWE,” the State Minister said.
“For five consecutive months through the CWE we have provided sugar at Rs. 115. We hope to give that relief to the people of this country in the future,” he added.
