Highways Minister Johnston Fernando said that the construction of two new sections of the Marine Drive, which has been identified as the most suitable option to reduce traffic congestion on the Colombo-Galle main road, from Kollupitiya to Stuart Place and from Wellawatte to Dehiwala Railway Station, is nearing completion.
The Minister disclosed this at a progress review meeting chaired by the Minister on Monday at the Ministry Auditorium with the participation of the engineers including the Project Director to review the current status of the construction of the Marine Drive.
Rs. 220 million has been spent for the 600 meter section of the four lane road from Kollupitiya to Stuart Place and Rs. 420 million has been spent for the 1.2 km section of the four lane road from Wellawatte to Dehiwala Railway Station.
This entire Marine Drive is 7.8 km from Stuart Place via Kollupitiya, Bambalapitiya, and Mount Lavinia to Dehiwala.
Mudilla trees have been planted on both sides of the road with the courtesy of NDB Bank.
Infrastructure such as construction of pavements on both sides of the road, construction of road signs, drainage system, parking facilities and replacement of street lights have also been developed.
