Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will inaugurate the ‘Hundred Cities’ program today from Hiripitya town in Kurunegala province, with the goal of beautifying and developing 100 cities.
For the beautification and urban development of towns that have not been developed in the country for a long time, the government has allotted Rs. 2 billion for 100 cities at a cost of Rs. 20 million each city.
By taking the necessary actions in accordance with a detailed plan, the government will transform the identified cities into public-friendly and attractive cities. On the instructions of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister of Urban Development and Housing, the Urban Development Authority (UDA) is implementing these 100 city development projects around the country.
The 100 city development project has chosen eight cities from the Kurunegala District.
The development of Hiripitya town, which began today, is based on a suggestion by UK Sumith Udukumbura, a member of Parliament.
Out of the other seven cities selected in the Kurunegala District, Kobeigane and Ambanpola have been selected on a proposal by Highways Minister Johnston Fernando.
Out of the remaining five cities, Bowatta, Bingiriya will be developed according to a proposal by State Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, Alawwa Town by MP Shantha Bandara, and Hettipola Town by MP Gunapala Ratnasekera. Makadura town in Pannala has been selected on the proposal of MP Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Katupotha town on a proposal by MP Samanpriya Herath.
The cities selected to be beautified under the project are as follows:
Colombo District: Kotikawatta, Hanwella, Padukka, Embulgama, Kaduwela, Vidyala Junction, and Moratuwa
Gampaha District: Peliyagoda, Ekala, Aweriyawatte, Minuwangoda, Henegama, Mirigama, Divulapitiya, Ganemulla, Pugoda, and Attanagalla
Kalutara District: Horana, Nagoda, Dodangoda, and Meegahathenna
Hambantota District: Weerawila, Ranna, Chitragala, Nonagama, Angunukolapelessa, and Lunugamvehera
Matara District: Deiyandara, Morawaka, Pitabeddara, Deniyaya, Weligama, and Kamburupitiya
Galle District: Kumarakanda, Benthara, Ambalangoda, and Habaraduwa
Ratnapura District: Kuruwita, Ayagala, Nivithigala, Godakawela, and Balangoda
Kegalle District: Rambukkana, Galigamuwa, Bulathkohupitiya, and Morontota
Kurunegala District: Kobeigane, Ambanpola, Hiripitiya, Bingiriya, Alawwa, Hettipola, Pannala, Polgahawela, and Bambukatuwa
Puttalam District: Chilaw, Thoppuwa, and Palaviya
Anuradhapura District; Thirappane, Eppawala, Kaju Gullewa, and Anuradhapura
Polonnaruwa District: Aralaganwila, Medirigiriya, Welikanda, and Jayanthipura
Kilinochchi District: Kilinochchi and Pooneryn
