Imports of organic and chemical fertilizers have been halted for the time being.
The decision was made in light of local farmers’ concentration on organic fertilizer production, according to the Director-General of Agriculture.
The Cabinet of Ministers, on the other hand, had earlier resolved to import the necessary organic fertilizer.
Meanwhile, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera has directed the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau to set up laboratory facilities in farmlands to ease soil testing. This task is now being carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture.
The farming community can obtain a soil test on their land, through the laboratory of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau.
