Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed appropriate authorities to provide prompt assistance to fishermen who have lost their daily fishing activity as a result of the X-Press Pearl ship fire.
While on an observation trip of the Uswetakeiyawa shore, which was impacted by debris from the MV X-Press Pearl, the Prime Minister gave instructions to look into the steps taken to reduce the harm to the maritime environment caused by the ship fire on Saturday (29) afternoon.
The Prime Minister instructed the officials of the Marine Environment Protection Authority to take all possible steps to protect the marine environment and to procure the necessary equipment and tools to deal with such disasters.

The Prime Minister also informed Kanchana Wijesekera State Minister of Ornamental Fish, Inland Fish & Prawn Farming, Fishery Harbor Development, Multiday Fishing Activities, and Fish Export that relief should be provided according to a plan to the fishermen affected by the suspension of daily fishing activities in the waters affected by the burning ship.
The Prime Minister also thanked the Sri Lanka Navy and other volunteers who cleaned up all the beach areas affected by the debris from the vessel and taking necessary steps to prevent marine pollution

Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, State Ministers Nalaka Godahewa and Kanchana Wijesekera, Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne, Secretary to the Ministry of Urban Development Sirinimal Perera, Chairman of the Urban Development Authority Harshan de Silva, Director General of the Environmental Security Council and senior government officials, accompanied the Prime Minister during the tour.
