According to the President’s Media Division (PMD), a five-member Commission of Inquiry (CoI) has been appointed to investigate the current situation of Sri Lanka Customs and make recommendations on improving its effectiveness .
Appointment of the Commission on the Directives of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the statement read further.
Judge Shiran Anthony of the Supreme Court has been appointed chairman of the Commission.
In the meantime, the representatives will be Appeals Court Judge Priyantha Fernando, High Court Judge Damith Thotawatte, Deputy Central Bank Governor K.M.M. Siriwardhane, Senior Trade Consultant Dr. Sanath Jayanetti and former Director General of Customs P.A. Dias.
The Commission is responsible for presenting recommendations for streamlining customs while avoiding allegations against the office and irregularities that are likely to occur.
The President also directed the Commission to obtain the opinions of members of the public and other relevant groups and to examine the suggestions made by the customs trade unions.
