The 11th phase of the ‘Discussion with the Village’ took place today in Karuwalagaswewa, Puttlam (20th) under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The President first visited the Muriyakulam Primary School in Puttlam and then attended a meeting in the Karuwalagaswewa Public Hall.
“There are many who oppose this program and point out its mistakes. They fear that they may lose their opportunities in the future when the head of state goes directly to the people. That is precisely why this program needs to be carried forward. Well, that’s the tactic. Something I say is wrongly interpreted,” said the President.
“As a result of a mistake on the part of forest conservation officials, the boundaries of the forest reserves have been marked in areas that were once traditional agricultural land for the people of these villages. So we held discussions and decided on a policy that would allow these people to farm on these lands. I don’t know what it is that they don’t understand. What I said was very clear,” he said.
The President noted that deforestation must be stopped immediately if it takes place.
He also pointed out that social media campaigns are underway to sabotage the President’s programs. – PMD
