The government will provide the Covid-19 vaccines free of charge to the general public, said Sudarshani Fernandopulle, State Minister of Primary Health Care, Epidemics, and Covid-19 Disease Control.
Speaking to a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau, the State Minister claimed that as soon as the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVISHIELD vaccine consignment containing nearly 600,000 vials of doses comes from India, Sri Lanka expects to launch an inoculation drive against novel coronavirus.
The vaccine will first be administered to almost 300,000 health workers who are on the front line of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country and tri-force officers who work closely with them. After a three-week interval from the first, the second jab will be offered to them, she explained.
Speaking further, she said that through the COVAX program, the United Nations-backed global campaign aimed at lower-income nations to obtain the jabs, approximately 20 percent of the necessary vaccines could be obtained.
