Senior Advisor to President Lalith Weeratunga says that Sri Lankans may receive the first coronavirus vaccine before the Sinhala and Hindu New Years.
He also points out that the negotiations are in the final stage of the procurement of the vaccine.
“Looking at the current situation, it can be said that this could begin… at least at the end of February or the first week of March. It can certainly be done before the Sinhala and the Hindu New Year.”
“First of all, we are giving this vaccine to frontline health workers. There are currently 155,000 of them. This is the recommendation of the World Health Organization. Second, the vaccine will be given to the front line personnel of the three forces and the police. There are 127,500 of them there. This is part of the National Vaccine Plan. ”
Weeratunga also said that the financial arrangements for vaccination had been completed. “Our treasury has raised the necessary funds,” he said.
