Dr. S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, arrived in Sri Lanka this evening (January 05) following an invitation from Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.
The official visit of Dr. Jaishankar to the island nation will continue until January 7th.
- Dr. Jaishankar is scheduled to have bilateral meetings with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, and Minister Gunawardena of Sri Lanka during his visit.
- Though this official visit marks the first arrival of a high-level international dignitary in Sri Lanka in 2021, it has also become Dr. Jaishankar, Minister of Foreign Affairs earliest’s official visit outside India for the New Year.
After the presidential election in November 2019, Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Jaishankar is the first official foreign visitor to Sri Lanka to express his congratulations and the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to conduct his first state visit to India.
Via these high-level exchanges, the two sides look forward to improving their bilateral ties in many areas of cooperation.
The visit was planned in the midst of travel restrictions for Covid-19 in both countries via the air-bubble model.
