Steps have been taken by the Ministry of Agriculture to develop an island-wide agricultural information management system.
Under the patronage of Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, a special discussion on the development of the agricultural information management system was recently held at the Ministry of Agriculture. It provides information on all agriculture-related public and private sector facilities and industries.
Information collection has already been completed in the districts of Vavuniya and Hambantota and more information is being gathered in many other districts. Minister Aluthgamage stressed that this system of knowledge should be continuously modified.
This includes what land is cultivated, what crops are cultivated, what crops and sizes are cultivated in one season in the island, and what methods should be used for cultivation.
This information management system covers agro-technical knowledge, production, marketing and pricing based on cultivation and active agricultural projects island wide.
Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Retired Major General Sumedha Perera, said that a significant portion of the information management system has already been completed.
